The retail industry in the state of Pennsylvania is abuzz with Governor Tom Corbett’s recent announcement of his plan to close the approximately 600 state-run liquor stores and return the market to the private sector.
The governor’s plan would replace the state-run stores with 1,200 wine and liquor retailers. The licenses for these businesses would be auctioned off to the highest bidders. Early estimates expect the fees for these licenses would generate up to $1 billion over the first ten years.
Previous attempts to return the spirits industry to the private sector failed to make it through the state legislature for various reasons. It remains to be seen what will become of the governor’s latest proposal, but wine and spirit retailers across the state will be paying close attention.
